For website ranking by a search engine there are a number of factors involved. 

There are a number of different search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing, and they all have their own formulas determining how your website gets ranked. These companies are indexing web pages on the internet and when visitors enter a search term into these search engines, they search through the index of the web.

To explain ranking fully, you need to understand how a search engine works to rank your website. Search engines use Crawling and Indexing robots to evaluate web pages.With over 60 Trillion pages on the internet (that figure is constantly growing), they need to be indexing constantly to have correct information for the visitor's search. Crawling is a robot (spider/algorithm) that follows links from page to page for a certain word or website. Or a search engine (Spider) will determine how a easy it is to get around the website. Indexing is when a page goes into the search engines pages. The search engine then sorts pages by their content and other factors.

Search Engines use algorithms to understand what you mean when you enter a search term. These algorithms are factors such as Spelling, Query Understanding, Auto-Complete, Search Methods, Personalisation, and much more. The search engine will use this information to create results with a ranked list for the search. The ranking factors vary for each company, but Google alone has over 200 components. For your web page to be placed on the Search Engines Results Page (SERP) in the top position, you have to be hitting the nail on the head.
